March is here and I finally feel like shedding my old winter skin, in many ways. I finally start to feel my inner self waking, turning my face towards the warm sun and blossoming.
One of my favourite skincare products are sheet masks – a Korean skincare phenomenon that took the rest of the world by storm. And I completely understand why!
The cotton sheet mask is literally drenched in all the goodness your skin is thirsty for. It’s a professional treatment you can easily use at home – a hydrated and nourished complexion whilst you unwind on your sofa. Who wouldn’t like that?!
“The earliest records of face masks go back 5,000 years to India. In ancient Ayurvedic tradition, face and body masks called “ubtan” were made using a combination of herbs, plants, and flowers.”
But who invented sheet masks?
The history of sheet masks dates back to 1857 when Parisian women used slices of beef on their skin to avoid signs of aging and wrinkles.
Now, although I wouldn't be willing to do that even if I had the most wrinkly complexion, Parisian women knew something important.
At a certain age your skin starts to lose its elasticity, luminosity & overall healthy and hydrated look. It is absolutely in need of something that will deeply nourish and care for it in the most kind and delicate way.
Why are sheet masks effective?
It's very similar to serum, but in some ways even better. Usually sheet masks are made of cotton, biocellulose, hydrogel, cupra, tencel or other thin & fast-absorbing materials that are later infused with all the hydrating and active ingredients.
The sheet prevents water and formula essence from evaporating into air, allowing your skin to better absorb all the beneficial goodness and making them super effective!
What is your goal?
There are hundreds of thousands of different formulas and sheet masks out there that serve a different purpose. It's important to understand your reason as to why you want & need one.
Brightening sheet masks
Usually have Niacinamide, Pearl extracts, natural root extracts like liquorice root extract and most commonly Vitamin C or something of similar nature. These are made for dull skin that is in need of brightening, quite literally.
Exfoliating sheet masks
Mainly used to treat pore-prone skin. Typically such masks will have salicylic acid that helps your skin appear more healthy by dissolving the type of skin debris that clogs pores and causes acne.
"Salicylic acid can directly dissolve the keratin plugs and regulate the skin cells," says Rachel Nazarian, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New York City.
AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) masks work well on the skin's surface to loosen old, dead skin and reveal fresh newer skin.
Most popular - Hydrating sheet masks
Are for dry or dehydrated skin and also perfectly suitable for mature skin. Most common ingredients are hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate and different extracts.
Calming & Soothing sheet masks
Also a wonderful pick for mature skin as it's usually very sensitive and needs some extra delicate care, especially when living in the city.
These masks usually have the holy grail ingredient Panthenol that reduces inflammation, itching, improves hydration and accelerates epidermal wounds' rate of healing.
Chamomile extracts are widely used as well as Centella Asiatica and honey.
So called “anti-aging” sheet masks
I honestly hardly tolerate the “anti-aging” slogans, but oh well, it's what they do I guess. Usually such masks have collagen as well as many other popular ingredients such as snail mucin, adenosine and ginseng root extract.
The secret is out…
